Canary Islands Getaway: Stargazing In Tenerife

The Starlight Foundation is a legal non-profit organization created in 2009 by the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands. It is responsible for the development and promotion of the protection of the night sky and cultural diffusion of astronomy. It is also involved in the certification of different locations worldwide that meet the requirements for stargazing.

Starlight Tourist Destinations are visitor attractions  with excellent  conditions for observing the stars , which are protected from light pollution and are suitable for tourist activities based on the stars as an integral part of Nature.

The Starlight Certification for Rural Hotels and Houses is a qualification awarded by the Starlight Foundation to those establishments which, as well as offering accredited quality accommodation, also become involved as active agents in the promotion of the values of the organization and provide their customers with information about Starlight as well as means and instruments for astronomical observation.

Tenerife is a privileged island, not only because of its climate. The peaks of the island, away from the light pollution of urban areas, are the best place to stargaze and the sky of the Teide National Park is certified as a “Starlight Destination”. From Tenerife, 83 of the 88 officially recognized constellations can be seen and you only need to go up to Teide to view all the constellations of the northern hemisphere and most constellations of the southern hemisphere.
