Spain Getaways: A Visit To The Lakes Of Covadonga In Asturias

Hiking Routes Around The Lakes

Located at the heart of the Picos de Europa National Park in the region of Asturias, Lakes of Covadonga are a paradise for nature lovers. These glacial lakes are located over 1,000 meters above sea level. To fully appreciate the beauty of the landscape, I recommend following the Lakes of Covadonga route, a very easy circular route of about 5 kilometers long. The route starts at Pedro Pidal Visitor Centre where you can get plenty of information about the area. You will then follow the path towards Lake Ercina, the highest lake from where you can view the summit of Pena Santa. A highly recommended spot is the Entrelagos viewpoint, where you can see one of the best picture postcard views in the area. The route continues through the plains around Bricial, the Palomberu beech forest and the plains around Enol. To end your hiking route,  just 12 kilometers from the lakes is Sanctuary of Covadonga, a place of worship and pilgrimage dedicated to Our Lady of Covadonga that is worth a visit.
