San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is an idyllic island located on the coast of the Basque Country and attached to land by a stone bridge with 241 steps. Gaztelugatxe has been the scenario of pirates and legends and it is considered one of the most valued sites by travelers. It has also been a location for the Game of Thrones series.
On top of the island you can see a small church built in the 9th century. Unfortunately, it is not the original one as over the centuries, there have been fires and battles and the church was rebuilt on several occasions. Once you reach the chapel, there is a footprint supposedly left by Saint John the Baptist and it will bring you good luck if you step on it. The best time to visit San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is during the months of spring and summer. You can drive or take a bus from Bilbao but even though access is free, you need to get a ticket in advance on their website.
